A nurse who was fired from the NHS after offering a bible to a cancer patient and encouraged him to sing The Lord is My Shepherd was fairly dismissed, a court has ruled.
In 2016 Sarah Kuteh was fired from her job at Darent Valley Hospital in Kent for breaking a code of conduct as determined by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) rules. Sarah repeatedly talked about her faith to other patients.
While this seems like a gesture of good faith, it was said she was breaking the NMC rules, after a patient complained about her actions.

Sarah took this issue to court, but the court ruled in favor of her dismissal.
According to the Daily Mail, the court ruling stated that the patient had replied ‘open minded’ to the question on the form concerning religion and alleged the Claimant had told him that the only way he could get to the Lord was through Jesus.
She then told him she would give him her bible if he did not have one; gripped his hand tightly and said a prayer that was very intense and went ‘on and on’; and asked him to sing Psalm 23 [The Lord is My Shepherd] after which he was so astounded that he had sung the first verse with her. The patient then described the encounter as ‘very bizarre’ and likened it to a Monty Python skit.
Sarah says she believes that she did not act inappropriately and asked that there be a clear distinction between appropriate and inappropriate expressions of religious beliefs in the code.

She also believes that the ruling is in direct conflict with her right to express her religious beliefs. The Christian Legal Centre, which represents Sarah, said she is currently in discussion with her legal team to consider her next step.
