NYC pays $17M in three Queens wrongful conviction cases amid fears about prosecutor misconduct — ‘Some people get framed’

Image
Source: https://www.nydailynews.com The ghost of Queens District Attorney Richard Brown has cost city taxpayers $17.25 million in the past five months. The money is being paid to settle three lawsuits alleging prosecutorial misconduct during Brown’s tenure leading the office from 1991 to his death in 2019 — and comes amid growing scrutiny of some New York prosecutors’ pursuit of criminal convictions at all costs. Brown seems to have been aware of his office’s alleged misconduct, which imprisoned people for years for crimes they were later found not to have committed. At one point, Brown wrote to a top aide, Jack Ryan: “Jack, I think we’ve been getting away with this sort of thing for a long time.” That quote comes from a document uncovered by Joel Rudin, a lawyer who represents the three men who won the $17.25 million in legal settlements. New Bill Would Hit Parents With $1,000 Fine For Smoking With Children In Car

Image
This new bill would punish parents for smoking in the car while their children are inside. In the field of economics, there is a concept referred to as externalities. In a nutshell, externalities refer to any action that has an unintentional impact on others in a way that wasn’t factored into the products initial cost. Sometimes, these unintended consequences can end up positive; When a bee keeper’s bees pollinate a nearby farmer’s crops. Much more commonly though, externalizes end up being negative, such as when a factory rids itself of waste by dumping into a nearby river. Externalities are not limited to economics though, and our day to day lives can lead to these unintended consequences as well. A prime example of one of these externalities is smoking. <span

data-mce-type=”bookmark”<br /&gt

Missing girl helped lead authorities to the man accused of kidnapping her and killing her parents

(CNN) — Jayme Closs escaped from the remote Wisconsin residence of her suspected captor — a man now arrested on suspicion of killing the teen’s parents and abducting her three months ago — and then flagged down a woman who was walking her dog, authorities said. The case spurred numerous searches and thousands of tips from the public, but it was 13-year-old Jayme who helped herself to freedom. “In cases like this we often need a big break, and it was Jayme herself who gave us that break,” FBI Special Agent Justin Tolomeo told reporters Friday during a news conference in the girl’s hometown of Barron, Wisconsin. Jayme, who was reported missing October 15 after her parents were found shot dead in their home near Barron, was discovered walking alone Thursday afternoon two counties to the north, outside the rural community of Gordon , authorities said. The "suicide game" involves completing 49 twisted tasks before taking your own life to "win." By Annie Garau Published August 1, 2017 Facebook A 14-year-old in Mumbai, India flung himself from the roof of a seven-story building on Saturday in order to win a terrifying game that is apparently spreading around the world. According to the Mumbai police, the boy is India’s first reported Blue Whale Challenge casualty. Though rumors of the seemingly oxymoronic “suicide game” were originally thought to be a hoax, this boy’s death — along with numerous other casualties — shows that the hashtag can indeed have real and deadly consequences. Here’s how it works: Social media users find a game “curator” by searching for the term online. That person then sends them daily tasks like carve “F57” into your hand with a razor, go on a roof and sit with your feet dangling off the edge, and visit a railroad. The “players” are supposed to send photos of
